Do You Qualify for GLP-1 Medication? Eligibility Explained
GLP-1 medications are not one-size-fits-all. Here's a clear breakdown of who qualifies, what the evaluation involves, and what happens if you're not immediately approved.
Understanding GLP-1 Eligibility
GLP-1 receptor agonists are powerful medications with a strong safety profile, but they are not appropriate for everyone. The FDA has established specific eligibility criteria for their use in weight management, and RxVigor's licensed physicians follow these guidelines carefully to ensure every patient receives care that is both safe and appropriate for their individual health situation.
BMI-Based Eligibility
The primary eligibility criteria for GLP-1 weight management therapy are based on body mass index (BMI):
BMI of 30 or higher (classified as obesity) qualifies without any additional conditions required.
BMI of 27 or higher (classified as overweight) qualifies when accompanied by at least one weight-related health condition, such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure (hypertension), high cholesterol (dyslipidemia), obstructive sleep apnea, or cardiovascular disease.
If you're unsure of your BMI, it can be calculated by dividing your weight in kilograms by your height in meters squared, or by using any standard online BMI calculator. RxVigor's health assessment will also calculate this for you automatically.
Health Conditions That Qualify Alongside BMI 27+
If your BMI falls between 27 and 29.9, you still qualify for GLP-1 therapy if you have been diagnosed with any of the following: type 2 diabetes or prediabetes, hypertension (high blood pressure), hyperlipidemia (high cholesterol or triglycerides), obstructive sleep apnea, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), or a history of cardiovascular disease.
Who Does Not Qualify
There are several medical conditions that preclude GLP-1 therapy. These include a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) or multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2), a history of pancreatitis, severe gastrointestinal disease, current pregnancy or breastfeeding, and certain kidney or liver conditions. Your physician will review your complete medical history during the evaluation process to identify any contraindications.
What the Evaluation Process Involves
At RxVigor, the evaluation process is entirely online and takes approximately 5–10 minutes. You'll be asked to provide basic demographic information, your current height and weight, a summary of your medical history and current medications, and answers to a series of health screening questions. You'll also be asked to upload a recent full-length photo, which helps your physician assess your overall health context.
A licensed physician reviews your submission — typically within 24 hours — and makes an independent clinical determination about whether GLP-1 therapy is appropriate for you. If approved, your prescription is sent to a licensed compounding pharmacy and your medication ships within 1–2 business days.
What If You're Not Immediately Approved?
If your physician determines that GLP-1 therapy is not appropriate at this time, you will receive a clear explanation of the reason and, where applicable, recommendations for alternative approaches or additional information that could support a future approval. RxVigor's care team remains available to answer questions and guide you toward the most appropriate path forward for your health goals.
